In case you missed it, last week was our first Angry Woman Book Club of the year with
author of The Good Mother Myth. This book was a fantastic blend of personal narrative and historical, cultural context about how we came to believe that good motherhood is synonymous with constant physical and emotionally availability — and a completely sacrificial sort of love. She dives into the shoddy research that undergirds our long-held beliefs around motherhood, and rightly interrogates the men who cherrypicked data to serve their own belief systems. It is both an enraging and deeply validating read, and one I cannot stop recommending to my friends.
We had a wonderful conversation where we talked about the research that defined popular ideas about best parenting practices, how media shapes our ideas about motherhood, and the joys of parenting older kids (it gets better, you guys! truly).
You can re-watch the full recording here, or listen to it like a podcast (my favorite).
Thanks for sharing, Gemma!
