Invitation: August Book Club with Anna Goldfarb author of "Modern Friendship"
Join us as we talk all things friendship this month!
SOME NEWS! I officially reopen for 1:1 writing coaching consultations this week. If you’ve been interested in 1:1 coaching to complete your book proposal, write your manuscript, or get back into a solid writing routine, I only offer these free consults a couple times per year, so book yours today! There’s no commitment, just an exploration of what coaching can look like for you and some time to ask questions to get to know me.
I celebrated my birthday last week, and spent the evening at Lake Tahoe surrounded by friends as we watched the sunset, as is my birthday tradition. I plan out this birthday get together every year, send invites and reminders to friends, make sure we have enough food, and floaties and shade and….it can be kind of a lot.
I’ve shifted a good deal of the mental load to Rob for the day-of preparations, but I’m still the instigator and planner - something I was a little salty about the first year I did this celebration. Why aren’t my friends planning my party? Why am I the one showing up on MY birthday to do all this work? Throwing any type of party (stressful!) usually means a little pity party for me too.
(Also, I’m a Cancer on the cusp of Leo, so I’ve got big “celebrate me” energy coupled with big emotions when I experience any sort of unmet expectations. Whee!)
Which is why I am so thankful I had
’s book Modern Friendship fresh in my head as I approached my birthday celebrations this year. Her book is a how-to guide on nurturing friendships and shifting your perspective on friendship as well. It challenges you to think about your friendships in new (and less loaded) ways, and serves as a reminder that we have to show up for the people in our lives if we want deeper connections. It reminded me that the effort I put into my beach birthday is a way I celebrate my friendships as I open the door for them to celebrate me.I can’t wait for you all to meet Anna, who is as wonderful in real life as she is on the page (ask me about how incredibly gracious she was when my cooking set off a smoke alarm while she was in the middle of telling me about her dad’s death).
She is “the New York Times’ friendship correspondent,” and her reporting on friendships has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and more. Anna’s book, Modern Friendship, explores the nuances of navigating adult friendships and it’s going to be an amazing book club pick you won’t want to miss.
She also publishes Friendship Explained, a (fantastic) Substack newsletter that explains the mechanics of friendship through a pop culture lens. Find her online @AnnaGoldfarb.
